Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our fertility calculators and how to use them.

General Questions

What is Fertility Numbers?
Fertility Numbers is a collection of evidence-based calculators designed to help individuals and couples understand fertility outcomes using published research and clinical data. All calculators provide statistical estimates based on population-level studies.
Are these calculators accurate?
Our calculators are based on published research and clinical data, providing population-level statistical estimates. However, individual outcomes vary significantly based on many factors including specific diagnoses, clinic protocols, and individual health circumstances. Use these as educational tools, not predictive guarantees.
Can I use these calculators for medical decision-making?
No. These calculators are for educational and informational purposes only. They do not constitute medical advice. Always consult with qualified healthcare providers, particularly reproductive endocrinologists, for medical decisions about your fertility treatment.
Is my data private?
Yes. All calculations are performed locally in your web browser. We do not collect, store, or transmit any of your personal health information. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Calculator-Specific Questions

What is AMH and why does it matter?
Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is a blood test that measures ovarian reserve—essentially, how many eggs you have remaining. Higher AMH levels typically indicate more eggs available, which can affect IVF outcomes. AMH is measured in ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter).
What is AFC?
Antral Follicle Count (AFC) is the number of small follicles (2-10mm) visible on an ultrasound during the early follicular phase of your cycle. Each follicle may contain an egg. AFC is another measure of ovarian reserve and helps predict how many eggs might be retrieved in an IVF cycle.
What does "euploid" mean?
Euploid means an embryo has the correct number of chromosomes (46 total: 23 from each parent). Euploid embryos have much higher success rates for implantation and healthy pregnancy compared to aneuploid (abnormal chromosome number) embryos. The percentage of euploid embryos decreases significantly with maternal age.
Why does the Miscarriage Risk Calculator only apply to natural conception?
IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A) screens for chromosomally normal embryos, which significantly reduces miscarriage risk compared to natural conception. Our calculator is based on natural conception data and would underestimate risk for IVF without PGT-A or overestimate it for IVF with PGT-A.
What's the difference between the two IVF calculators?
The IVF Attrition Calculator (eggfert-simple) is a simplified visualization showing the typical drop-off at each stage from eggs retrieved to live births. The IVF Euploid Embryo Calculator (eggfert2) provides more detailed modeling with uncertainty ranges and confidence intervals based on your AMH level.

Understanding Results

What does "95% confidence interval" mean?
A 95% confidence interval indicates the range where we expect the true value to fall 95% of the time based on statistical modeling. For example, if the calculator shows 3-7 euploid embryos, there's a 95% chance your result will fall within that range, though individual outcomes may vary.
Why is there such a wide range in the results?
Fertility outcomes involve significant biological variability. Even with identical AMH, age, and AFC, two people can have very different results due to factors like egg quality, sperm quality, fertilization rates, embryo development, and clinic-specific protocols. The wide ranges reflect this real-world uncertainty.
The calculator's prediction doesn't match my actual results. Why?
These calculators provide population averages. Individual results vary due to many factors we cannot account for: specific diagnoses (PCOS, endometriosis, male factor), medication protocols, clinic and lab quality, embryologist skill, and random biological variation. Your actual results are your true data point.
Can I save or print my results?
Yes! Most calculators include a "Save PDF" button that allows you to download your results as a PDF document for your records or to share with your healthcare provider.

Technical Questions

Do I need to create an account?
No. All calculators work without any registration or account creation. Simply input your values and see the results immediately.
Which browsers are supported?
Our calculators work on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of your browser.
Can I use these calculators on my phone?
Yes! All calculators are fully responsive and work on smartphones and tablets.
⚠️ When should I talk to a doctor instead of using these calculators?
Always consult a healthcare provider for:
  • Medical advice about your specific situation
  • Treatment planning and decisions
  • Interpreting your personal test results
  • Concerns about fertility or pregnancy
  • Questions about IVF protocols and medications
These calculators supplement but never replace professional medical guidance.
